Cellulite Removal Surgery

Before we talk about the Cellulite removal surgery; let’s know more about Cellulite.

What Is Cellulite?

Under your skin, there’s a network of connective-tissue strands, called septa, that holds the fat in place. If the septa aren’t strong and tightly woven together (which may be determined by genetics), the fat can bulge out between them, creasing ripples on the skin’s surface called Cellulite.

Women are more likely than men to have cellulite since they have fewer and less tightly arranged septa. Women also have thinner skin, as well as hormones that can affect the size of fat cells and the strength of the septa. To truly eliminate the problem, says dermatologist Molly Wanner, an instructor at Harvard Medical School, “you would have to get rid of the fat and, essentially, change the interior structure of the skin.”

Cellulite is one of the most common cosmetic issues faced by women of all shapes, sizes and ages. Nearly 80% of women have some form of cellulite: a dimpled or cratered appearance along the skin due to a “puckering effect” caused when fat pushes up against connective tissue. Specifically, cellulite is caused as a result of tension placed on the skin by fibrous bands that course through fat.

Having cellulite does not indicate that you are overweight. In fact, even women with a low BMI can experience cellulite along their thighs and buttocks. Cellulite can be difficult to effectively treat, especially since there are so many treatments that over-promise results.

Patients with moderate to severe cellulite will find that many non-surgical cellulite treatment methods will be completely ineffective. The International Journal of Dermatology reports that patients with level 2 or level 3 cellulite (when there is the appearance of cellulite whether or not the leg muscles are contracted) may only benefit from a Subcision procedure.

How Subcision Works

Subcision is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that works by cutting the fibrous bands beneath the skin, releasing the tension that causes cellulite. Using local anesthesia, a skilled dermatologist uses a specially designed needle to release the bands. Next, the subcutaneous fat below the skin’s surface is redistributed evenly to create a smooth surface.

In some cases, patients will also benefit from a fat transfer procedure to use the patient’s fat and tissue to fill in any pockets created by severing the tethered bands. A Subcision procedure requires minimal downtime, with many patients being able to return to normal physical activity on the same day as the procedure. Vigorous exercise can re-start within a week’s time. Bruising and light pain is common for the few days following the procedure and will resolve over time without intervention.

Why Cellulite Removal Surgery and What Causes Cellulite?

Cellulite forms when fibrous bands called “septa,” which connect the skin to the underlying muscle fascia, tighten irregularly, pulling down on the skin, and begin to break down, allowing the normal layer of fat beneath the skin to push upward. This results in the puckering or “cottage cheese” appearance.

An estimated 85 to 90% of adult women have cellulite, typically on the abdomen, buttocks, and thighs. The aging process can worsen the appearance of cellulite, as skin loses elasticity and is less able to resist irregular tension created by the fibrous bands. While overweight individuals tend to have more pronounced cellulite, it is common even in very lean women, and losing weight rarely gets rid of cellulite altogether.

Time Required for Cellulite Removal

It usually takes about 30-60 minutes to perform the removal. Time requirements for Endermologie and mesotherapy can, of course, vary depending on the number of areas being treated and size of each area.

What are the Side Effects of Cellulite Removal?

When non-invasive Endermologie is used for removal surgery, side effects are not an issue. When minimally-invasive mesotherapy is used for cellulite removal, side effects can include temporary bruising and redness.

How Long do Cellulite Removal Results Last?

With either method of procedure, results are dependent on the number of treatments. Each technique requires a series of treatments for noticeable results and usually continued maintenance treatments for ample upkeep.

What is the Recovery Time for Cellulite Removal?

There is no removal recovery time needed when Endermologie is the method of treatment. When mesotherapy is the chosen method of cellulite removal, recovery time is about one day.

Will My Insurance Company Cover Cellulite Removal?

Because of the cosmetic nature of these methods of cellulite removal, insurance does not apply.

Is These Much Discomfort for Cellulite Removal?

In either case of cellulite removal, discomfort and pain are almost non-existent. Mesotherapy may involve very temporary, mild aching in the areas of treatment.

What Types of Anesthesia is Necessary for Cellulite Removal?

For these methods of cellulite removal, anesthesia is not necessary. In some mesotherapy cases, a topical anesthetic may be used.

What Else Can I Combine Cellulite Removal With?

Endermologie can be beneficial as follow-up to liposuction, for rounding out the results. For further enhanced results, either method of cellulite removal can be combined with:
